TORONTO, NEW YORK, WASHINGTON, LONDON, KYIV – Yaroslav Trofimov has won the 2024 Peterson Literary Prize for his book Our Enemies Will Vanish: The Russian Invasion and Ukraine’s War of Independence (Penguin Press). The winner was announced at the Peterson Literary Fund’s awards gala held in the Guildhall of the historic Old Mill Toronto on November 30, 2024.

The winner is awarded $25,000 and the book’s publisher receives $5,000. 

The Peterson Literary Prize for nonfiction is a biennial international prize that recognizes the best books, written in English or Ukrainian, that promote a better understanding of Ukraine-related topics relevant to a global audience. 

Our Enemies Will Vanish was one of six books shortlisted for this year’s Peterson Literary Prize. Shortlisted finalists each receive $5,000.

In his book, author Yaroslav Trofimov, chief foreign-affairs correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, gives a riveting account of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the heroism of the  Ukrainian resistance. 

Trofimov spent months at the heart of the conflict, tracing the war’s key moments—from the battle for Kyiv to the grueling battles with the Wagner Group over Bakhmut. The story of the epic bravery of the Ukrainian people is also deeply personal for the author, who grew up in Kyiv, where his family has lived for generations. 

The selection of this year’s literary-prize winner and shortlist were made by members of the jury comprised of Canadian political scientist and jury chair Lisa Shymko, returning jurors Nadia Gereliouk, author and political scientist Alexander Motyl, literary scholar Marko Robert Stech, as well as British-born journalist Askold Krushelnycky. 

According to Lisa Shymko, chair of the Peterson Literary Fund jury, “Trofimov’s book is exceptional” because it transports the reader from the corridors of power to the gritty trenches of the frontline.” Our Enemies Will Vanish is a powerful account of Ukraine’s fight for survival and its refusal to surrender, which Shymko says impressed jurors with its “meticulous detail from both the human and geopolitical context.”

The Peterson Literary Prize is valued at $30,000 CAD. The winning author will receive a prize of $25,000 and an additional $5,000 will be awarded to the book’s publisher. Shortlisted finalists will each receive $5,000 CAD. 

The winner will be announced at the Peterson Literary Fund’s annual awards ceremony and dinner on November 30, 2024, in Toronto.

TORONTO – The Peterson Literary Fund at BCU Foundation is pleased to announce that Taras Kuzio, author of Russian Nationalism and the Russian-Ukrainian War: Autocracy-Orthodoxy-Nationality, is the winner of the 2022 Peterson Literary Prize for nonfiction. The book is published by Taylor & Francis/Routledge (United Kingdom). The winner was revealed at a gala dinner held on December 1st at the Old Mill Toronto.

In the words of the Awards Jury: “This timely and relevant book places imperial nationalism and chauvinism at the centre of Putin’s Russia and identifies them as the driving pretext for the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The book highlights a Tsarist Russian imperial denial of the existence of a distinct Ukrainian nation, as reflected in Putin’s obsession with Ukraine. The author traces the intensification of Russian chauvinism towards Ukraine and Ukrainians through three critical junctures in Putin’s political career. The book also investigates nationalism within the Russian Orthodox Church and pinpoints the dangerous rise of the red-white-brown (Soviet-Tsarist-fascist) nationalist coalition under Vladimir Putin.”

Peterson Literary Fund Announces Literary Prize Shortlist

TORONTO – The Peterson Literary Fund at BCU Foundation is pleased to announce six books shortlisted for the 2022 Peterson Literary Prize. The Peterson Literary Prize is a biennial international book prize recognizing original works of nonfiction written in English or Ukrainian. The prize recognizes books that promote a better understanding of Ukraine or the Ukrainian people and whose subject matter is relevant to the global Ukrainian community.

The Peterson Literary Prize is valued at $30,000 Canadian. The winning author will receive a prize of $25,000 Canadian dollars. An additional $5,000 CAD will be awarded to the book’s publisher. Shortlisted Finalists will each receive $5,000 CAD.

While the Peterson Literary Fund receives a high volume of English-language submissions from Europe and North America, according to Lisa Shymko, Chair of the Jury, “this year, notwithstanding the unimaginable challenges faced by authors and publishers in Ukraine resulting from Russia’s unprovoked war against Ukraine, we were pleased to receive an overwhelming number of nominations from Ukrainian publishers who are determined to remain viable and relevant in spite of this horrific war.”

The winner of the Peterson Literary Prize will be announced at a gala in Toronto hosted by the Peterson Literary Fund in cooperation with BCU Foundation on December 1, 2022.

The book traces the thread of Russian chauvinism from the Romanovs to Putin’s Russia, as it presents the unknown stories behind an array of vastly different historical figures, including Ivan Mazepa, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Mykola Skrypnyk, General Petro Grigorenko, Mikhail Gorbachev, and many others. As alluded to by the book’s title, readers are challenged to detoxify themselves from the imperialist myths imposed on the Ukrainian psyche by centuries of toxic Russian authoritarianism and destructive colonialist policies.

The book’s Jewish Ukrainian author analyzes the most painful events in the history of the Ukrainian and Jewish peoples and focuses on the systematic efforts of Russia’s tsarist and Soviet empires to sow inter-ethnic conflict, employing disinformation and historical fabrications to create hatred and disfunction. Relying on recently declassified KGB archives from the Security Service of Ukraine (СБУ), as well as CIA and OUN archives, the author seeks to uncover buried facts about several 20th-century Ukrainian and Jewish historical figures, some of whom are connected to the most contentious moments in the history of Ukraine and Israel. The author views the common aspirations of the Jewish and Ukrainian peoples to preserve their own identity and fight for their independence — the will to survive — as the mutual bond that ties both nations together.

Vitaly Portnikov

Roman Waschuk

– Canadian diplomat, global affairs expert. Former Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine (2014-2019) and Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia (2011-2014). Holds an MA in history from the University of Toronto. His diplomatic service included postings at the Canadian missions in Moscow, Kyiv, and Berlin. Fluent in English, French, German, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, and Serbian. An opinions contributor to The Atlantic Council, Emerging Europe, iPolitics, among others. Serves on several NGOs and is Chair of the Ukrainian World Congress, Foreign Policy Council.

The vision of Ukrainian-Canadian philanthropist Stanley Peterson takes shape, as literary fund bearing his name becomes reality

TORONTO – It was the dream of the late Ukrainian-Canadian philanthropist, Stanley Peterson, to establish an international literary fund designed to promote a better understanding of the Ukrainian experience and to recognize exceptional written works that are of interest to the global Ukrainian community and a broad audience of readers.

Born to Ukrainian parents in western Ukraine— Peterson’s life story embodies the harrowing experiences of many East European émigrés who escaped persecution and war. Finding refuge and freedom in Canada, he adopted a new name to fit into his new homeland. Driven by ambition, a keen mind, and a successful career in corporate accounting, and later in government finance, Stanley Peterson built an impressive investment portfolio, whose exponential growth enabled him to create the literary fund that carries his name.

About the Fund: The Stanley Peterson Literary Fund is unique in its scope, offering six distinct programs, including a cornerstone literary prize of $30,000, as well as a translated book award of $10,000, screenplay award of $10,000, and several targeted grants for writers and translators valued up to $10,000 each.
